WALT share our talents

Lucas and Jack are music pupils of Mrs Soper and she asked if they could come in and show us their keyboard skills.  Some people had some wonderings such as Mat, "What inspired you to learn the keyboard?"
How about posting some questions here that we could ask these students in class?

Arahi's Wow Moment

WALT use language features
Yesterday Arahi had a wow moment when he discovered onomatopoeia in his guided reading book Owls in the Garden.  It was, "whoo, whoo," and "Tu-whit, tu-whoo."

Elizabeth conencted this to her writing and made up these sentences using onomatopoeia:
"Tu whit ti whoo," the tui chirped. The monster went, "chomp, chomp, chomp."
"Slurp, slurp, slurp," said the pig while eating.
'Sh sh sh shhhh," said Mum
My gumboots went squish, squish.
The rain maker shook, SSSS   SSSSSS
"Ioow! " I said when I stepped in cow poo.

Questions to help us with our inquiry.

We sent some of our wonderings to Massey University for our visiting nutritionist, Angela to speak about.
Our wonderings to help us sort out the knowledge we already have about food choices.

·       Can you give me an example of an unhealthy dairy product and why it is unhealthy?
·       Can you tell us about a dairy product that doesn’t have milk?
·       Can you tell us how cheese is made?
·       Could you tell us about how you produce some of the products at Fonterra?
·       What would happen if dairy food ran out and how would it affect our growth?
·       Could you tell us something about calcium?
·       What happens if the power goes off at Fonterra?
·       Why is milk so important for our bones and muscles?
·       Could you tell us something about food colours?
·       How do mammals produce milk?
·       Can you tell us how ice cream is made?

Skyping with St James Aranui

St. James School Aranui

Today Room1 reporters, Ella, Lucas, Jacob and Mekaela, skyped St James Aranui in Christchurch. We asked St James Aranui some questions taking turns asking and answering questions about our schools and ourselves.
E.g.Ella asked “When you felt the earthquake, what did you think?” and Esther said it was scary and shaky.
At the end the four reporters from St James Aranui who were called Esther, Jonathan, Henry and Caitlin screamed a big THANK YOU!

By Jacob, Ella, Mekaela, Lucas E

Joshua used the u tube clip to list these ideas to help his hurdling skills.

How to do the Hurdles
* Use arms to force yourself over the hurdle
*use your right leg all time
*split your legs in the air
*leap for distance
*stay focused at all times

WALT throw the discus

This is a u tube clip that we viewed in our Middle team. It helped us to look at the skills we need for a standing discus throw. We shared and wrote two things we noticed about the video that we could practise during skills sessions.

Middle Team Food Experiment (Alana)

We made a pyramid on our floor and all the middle team filled it with food in the three areas of the food pyramid.
  1. Eat lots
  2. Eat some
  3. Eat less
We had lots of wonderings about where each food should go and applied some of the new knowledge that Mrs Joblin had shared with us.
Lucas said he wondered how such a small packet of peanuts could have so much sugar and salt in them.

Big Question: How Do your food choices impact on your body and health?

WAL about our first deep understanding which is:
How do food choices help our bodies to develop and grow in a healthy way?
  • Mrs Joblin is a health nurse and she came to help us find out which foods are healthy. Arahi
  • Healthy food gives us strength and energy.  Cain
  • Vegetables and fruits are good for us.  Erika
  • We only get energy from food.  Anneliese
  • Bright coloured food makes us want to eat it.  Diego
  • Mrs Joblin helped us inquire how many caloires are in some food.  Mekaela
  • A small packet of salted peanuts has the same amount of salt as a large bag of chips.  Mat
  • Coke can help stop diahorrea. Ella
  • Food with only natural sugars such as apples are healthy.  Lucas
  • We learnt that without healthy food our muscles wouldn't be strong and our brains wouldn't develop well.  Dominic

Rapunzel Retell.

This morning we worked in five groups to retell the events from the u tube clip we watched called Rapunzel.
We used the thinking hats to think about how our learning went.
  • Yellow hat: Joshua liked seeing the clip.  Anneliese's group worked in unity.  Erika liked sharing ideas with others.
  • Black hat: Our group didn't listen to each other and all wanted to talk at the same time.  I heard a lot of arguing. Ella.  We could have thought of better words to put in our sentences.  Dominic.
  • Green hat:   Make a table group s we don't have to move around. Gabi. Split our writing book into a storyboard and write the series of events on our own. Zavier. Use the storyboard for an animation.Jack. We could do a donnut.Mekaela.

Class Learning Goals

This week we decided to brainstorm six goals that would help improve our listening and learning.  These are the ones we voted to focus on;
  1. get ready for learning
  2. don't talk when the teacher is talking
  3. show respect to adults in the class
  4. don't distract others from their learning
  5. don't be distracted by others
  6. look for ways to help other students in class time
Our next step is to link these to the key competencies and our SUPER Gospel values.
Watch this space.

How has Maori culture helped form our kiwi culture?

WAL how Maori culture has helped form our kiwi culture?
During tuning in, we watched a clip of the haka on you tube.
Next we organised our thoughts about the haka using a graphic organiser called Think Boxes.

See it:
  • We drew an image of the haka
Feel it:
  • It makes me feel excited because it makes me want to watch the game and do the haka too.  Alyssa
  • It makes me feel prickly.  Jordan
  • It makes me shout with excitement.  Elizabeth
Ask it:
  • Why can’t girls do the haka? Arahi, Ella, Katie, Joshua.
  • Who invented the haka? Mat, Thomas, Gabi, Lucas
  • Where would be the most suitable place to do a haka and why?Zavier
  • Why was the haka invented?
  • What do the actions mean in the haka? Jack, Joshua
  • Are there any other types of haka? Jacob, Fletcher
Show it:
  • We drew symbols like the koru, kiwi, silver fern, rugby ball, rugby world cup trophy, All Blacks top.

Plus:
  • We now know how we can save energy.-Anneliese
  • We know which forms of energy are renewable.-Alyssa
  • We know that we should do something about saving electricity such as turning off the light when we finish reading. Gabi
  • We know which elements can generate electricity.-Mat
  • We used our prior knowledge to begin our sorting out.-Alana
  • We now know how we can make a difference.-Mekaela
  • We should try to use only renewable energy.-Joshua
  • We now know how the energy sources make electricity.-Diego
  • We made a paper windmill that is a symbol of wind power.-Jordan
  • We learnt how important energy is to us and that the sun is the most valuable energy source for us.-James
  • Solar energy will nevenr run out.  Elizabeth
  • You can cook food on solar dishes.  Dominic
  • Hydro electric power is a highly effiecent example of a renewable energy.  Mat
Minus

  • When will people stop trying to use fossil fuels?  Zavier
  • Some types of electricity harm the environment.  Ella
Interesting:
  • How can we save energy? Cain
  • There can be wind turbines in the sea-Arahi
  • Why is wind a source of energy? Jack
  • Why do the solar panels trap the sun's energy source? Fletcher
  • Why are the wind turbines blades 4 buses long? Jacob
  • The first solar panel was made in 1860.  Lucas

Our Bio Gas Experiment

On Monday we began our experiment about bio gas.  We dropped 30 peas that had soaked in water, in a plastic bag. Next we put these peas in the sun. We're wondering:                           Anneliese: What will the peas look like after a week?   Mekaela: What will the bag look like after a week?Gabi: Will the peas rot and why?        Dominic: Will the bag dehydrate?                  James:  Does it matter whether the bags are in the sun or shade?                                                  James and Lucas have put their bags in the cupboard to get shade.   The other bags are in the full sun.
Tuesday: Zavier noticed condensation inside the bags.
Wednesday: Hoani observed that some of the peas are splitting and sprouting.

Painting about our Fairy Tale The Bee-Man of Orn

First we read the story about the Bee-Man.  Next we studied the amazing pictures in the book.  Then we watched the DVD about the illustrator P.J.Lynch.  He showed us how to make an illustration from the first idea to the final picture.  After that we followed our own process with our pictures.  Step 1 we sketched using a pencil. Step 2 we dyed the background using a light yellow.  Step 3 we used the primary colours to mix our colours and paint our pictures from the lightest colours to the darkest colours like P.J. Lynch showed us.
The 5 ws thinking tool.
What happened ?: The Bee-man saved the baby from the dragon. Fletcher.
Who was there ?: The Bee-Man, the baby, the Tiny Imp, the junior Sorcerer, the languid youth, the Lord of the Domain, the dragon, the village people, the master sorcerer, the babies mother.
Why did it happen?: It happened because the Bee-Man wanted to know what he was? Jordan.
When did it happen? It happened really long ago because the pictures were old fashioned.  Anneliese.
Where did it happen? The setting of the story was in the Bee-man's village and a gloomy cave.

Ala showed us her expertise at Tae Kwan Do

In my expert talk I was doing Tae kwon do. I did some clicks and punchs. My colour on my belt was yellow. The colour on my dad's belt was black.

Diego's expert talk about Spanish.

On St Patrick's day I gave an expert talk about Spanish. At first I was really embarrassed about it, but then I was OK. When we finished, we sang a song that I had taught the class called "Adios amigos." I liked it. From: Diego.

On Wednesday Jemma’s Mum Tina and Hannah’s Mum Michelle set up an outward bound course on the back field.
They set up a rope, cargo net, vault and three boxes with some poles over the top.
I was motivated but nervous and challenged at the same time. On the second run our team, called the silver ferns, were getting timed on the adventure playground and our time was ten minutes and thirty five seconds.
